Getting Started

Before you begin your driving lessons with John you will need to have a provisional driving license.

Provisional License

Before you can legally drive a car in the UK you need to obtain a provisional driving license. To do this you need to obtain and complete form D 1 (available from the Post Office). Be sure to enclose proof of your identity, two passport-type photos and the application fee. Allow two to four weeks from time of posting for delivery. See the DVLA web site for further information.

Theory and Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

Both tests need to be successfully passed before you can apply for a practical driving test. Once passed, the certificate is only valid for 2 years.

The Theory test consists of 35 multiple choice questions which must be answered in 1 hour. The questions cover a wide range of subjects from the Highway Code. After the theory test you will go on to take the Hazard Perception Test. During this test you are presented with video clips taken from the driver's point of view. Various hazardous situations will arise and you click your mouse button/touch the screen to register when you see hazard.

To book your Theory and HPT test on-line or obtain further information about the Theory and the HPT tests visit the DSA web site. John can offer you further advice and loan you various books and CD-ROMs to ensure you pass these tests as part of your on-going training.
